ลักษณะทั่วไป
แมงเงาเป็นสัตว์มี ลำตัวเป็นปล้อง มีขาจำนวน 8 ขาอวัยวะที่โดดเด่น คือ "ก้ามใหญ่" (pedipalps) ลำตัวประกอบด้วยปล้อง 7 ปล้อง สีดำตับหมัด แมงเงามีตา แต่มีประสิทธิภาพการมองเห็นต่ำมาก ไม่ไวต่อแสง แม้มีข้อด้อย เรื่อง”สายตาบ่ค่อยเห็นหุ่ง” แต่ก็มีสิ่งทดแทนนั่นคือ “ขน” ทั่วตัวแมงป่องปกคลุมด้วยเส้นขนนับไม่ถ้วน โดยเฉพาะบริเวณปล้องพิษ หรือปล้อง “ไล” ขนเหล่านี้รับความรู้สึกจากเสียงมาก รับรู้จึงเคลื่อนไหวของสิ่งต่างๆ รอบตัว เมื่อมีเหยื่อหรือศัตรูเข้ามาใกล้

อาหารของแมงเงา
ได้แก่ พวกสัตว์ตัวเล็กๆ เช่น แมงมุม กิ้งกือ หนอน และแมลงอื่นๆ โดยจะกินขณะที่เหยื่อยังไม่ตาย แมงเงาจะใช้ก้ามจับเหยื่อก่อนแล้วใช้หางที่มีเหล็กไนต่อยเหยื่ออย่างรวดเร็ว ซ้ำหลายๆ ครั้ง จนกระทั่งเหยื่อตายแมงเงาจึงจะใช้ก้าม ตัดอาหารออกเป็นชิ้นเล็กๆ ก่อนที่จะกิน
ชีววิทยาของแมงเงา
แมงเงาจะตั้งท้องนานประมาณ 7 เดือน จากนั้นจะออกลูกออกมาเป็นตัวในช่วงเดือนพฤษภาคมถึงสิงหาคม ช่วงฤดูฝนที่มีอาหารอุดมสมบูรณ์ ก่อนตกลูก แม่แมงป่องจะซ่อนตัวในที่ปลอดภัย ลูกแมงป่องเกิดใหม่จะคลานไปมาบริเวณ ใต้ท้องแม่ แมงเงาตกลูกครั้งละประมาณ 7-28 ตัว ลูกแมงป่องเกิดใหม่จะปีนขึ้นไปเกาะกลุ่มเป็นก้อนสีขาวยั้วเยี้ยบนหลังแม่แมงป่อง ซึ่งระยะนี้แม่แมงป่องจะกินอาหารและน้ำน้อยมาก และไม่เคลื่อนย้ายไปไหนหากไม่จำเป็น ลูกแมงป่องช้างแรกเกิดมีสีขาวล้วน ยกเว้นตาที่เป็นจุดดำสองจุด ใช้เวลา 2 สัปดาห์ จึงออกจากหลังแม่ลงสู่พื้นดิน หลังจากที่ลงสู่พื้นดิน ลูกแมงป่องช้างแต่ละตัวมีอัตราการเจริญเติบโตไม่เท่ากัน มีการลอกคราบเพื่อการเจริญเติบโต 7 ครั้ง ช่วงนี้เป็นช่วงที่อ่อนแอ และมีโอกาสถูกจับกินได้ง่ายทั้งจากผู้ล่าอื่น และจากการกินพวกเดียวกันเอง

การเจริญเติบโตตั้งแต่แรกเกิดจนเป็นตัวเต็มวัยใช้ระยะเวลาประมาณ 2 ปี จึงจับคู่ผสมพันธุ์ ออกลูกปีละครั้ง และในช่วงชีวิตหนึ่งมีลูกได้อย่างน้อย 2 ครั้ง แมงป่องช้างเป็นพวกที่ชอบขุดรูอยู่ใต้ดินหรือตามใต้ขอนไม้ โดยในโพรงพบว่ามีการเลี้ยงดูลูกในแต่ละรุ่นเป็นระยะเวลายาวนาน 1-2 ปี ในโพรงจึงพบลูกหลายๆ รุ่นอยู่ด้วยกัน เรียกว่าพฤติกรรมการอยู่รวมกันแบบกึ่งสังคม (Advanced sub social behavior) พฤติกรรมที่น่าสนใจของแมงป่องคือการเลี้ยงดูลูก เช่นพบพฤติกรรมการป้อนน้ำให้ลูกของแมงเงาภายนอกโพรง ใกล้ๆบริเวณปากรู แม่ช่วยจับเหยื่อที่มีขนาดใหญ่ให้ลูก อีกทั้งป้องกันอันตรายให้ลูก
เรื่องน่ารู้เกี่ยวกับแมงป่อง
• แมงป่องทุกชนิดมีพิษ เป็นสารประกอบพวกโปรตีน แต่ละชนิดมีความรุนแรงของพิษแตกต่างกัน
• แมงป่องใช้พิษเพื่อทำให้เหยื่อมีอาการเป็นอัมพาต แล้วจึงค่อยๆ กินเหยื่อเป็นอาหาร แมงป่องจึงเป็นผู้ล่าที่สำคัญต่อระบบนิเวศ ช่วยควบคุมจำนวนของเหยื่อได้แก่ แมลง และสัตว์มีกระดูกสันหลังขนาดเล็กๆ
• ปัจจุบันมีการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับพิษของแมงป่องเพื่อนำมาใช้ประโยชน์ทางการแพทย์ เช่นใช้พิษแมงป่องฆ่าเซลล์มะเร็ง
• แมงป่องบางชนิด เช่น แมงป่องช้าง ถูกนำมาบริโภคเป็นอาหารและด้วยความเชื่อในเรื่องสรรพคุณทางยา เช่น ยาโด๊บ การรักษาโรคอัมพาต เป็นต้น
